Kato Devar Haws Sr.

Kato Devar Haws Sr.: The following story was typed by Kato Devar Haws, Sr. 30 May 1983 and given to me Wallace R. Haws

"SAVED BY THE FAITH OF OUR MOTHER"

When we lived in Colonia Juarez, Mexico, when I was approximate 12 years old, Mother and Father were in disagreement about something. Daddy was away in the mountains. Mother suddenly decided she would leave Old Mexico and go home to her in Safford, Arizona, USA.

She loaded the children in our model A ford, loaded some water and food and a little bedding and headed out. We finally stopped to rest out on this big prairie "a hundred miles from no where."

We pulled the car off the side of the road, in the grass that was thick and as high as my head. The baby was crying for some milk, so Mother told someone to start a fire and warm the milk. In the process of starting the fire, the prairie grass was also started on fire and it spread fast. In a matter of seconds our car and all our possessions went up in flames and we were saved from burning only because the road was extra wide at that point.

What a sorry situation to be in! There we were, miles from home and miles from the American border that we were trying to reach. We were all crying and bunched together in the middle of the road wondering what we were going to do, wishing Daddy would come along.

It was not very long after this that two Mexican men drove up in an old pickup. After talking to Mother, they said they would take us to Columbus, USA and that was where Mother wanted to go. (about 40 miles).

So they loaded us in the pickup and started on, but they didn't take us to Columbus but to an old ranch house. I'm sure their intentions were not good and we were frightened. When Mother realized the situation we were in, she started to pray and sing hymns. I remember her standing out in the yard singing one hymn after another. She knew all the hymns. I don't really know all the details but the men's hearts were softened and after awhile they loaded us back into the pickup and took us to Columbus, New Mexico, and left us in the custody of the American border guards. In Columbus Mother found a hotel and we were there about three days before Daddy finally found us. We were thankful when he came and we returned to Colonia Juarez with him.

I am sure that Mother's faith and prayers and her ability to sing the beautiful hymns saved us from a very bad situation"

The following are videos taken in 2 parts of Kato Devar Haws Sr. telling this story Christmas Day December 2009 at the home of Wallace Ray Haws. Unfortunately we didn't start the video at the beginning of this unexpected spontaneous event.

2009 Annual Report

2009 was a great year for us. The year started out with a pretty dismal economic picture, but we pressed forward and accomplished a lot. We feel great about our family and are very optimistic about the future.

This is the report.
